14U Water Polo Season Starts
Submitted By Mark Gibson on Tuesday, November 21, 2017
The Paul Taylor Invitational marked the start of our 14U water polo season!  Both our boys and girls Inferno teams brought the heat to the opposing teams at the Olympium in Etobicoke.  While most of our athletes have attended this tournament before, it was the first for many of them at this 14U level, including a few 12U players brought up this weekend (very much appreciated!), and our newest boys member.

In their first tilt, the 14U Boys faced the eventual tournament champions, Mavericks Black.  After this loss, Inferno bounced back with a tie against Southwest, renewing their confidence and drive.  Their next two matches in the playoffs against Shadow and Mavericks Red were victories sparked by sound defense, well-executed offensive sets, and overall skill, led by the veterans on the team and bolstered by the rookies.  This resulted in their qualification for the Bronze Medal game against Saskatchewan.  The score of this loss did not reflect how competitive and close our 14U Boys were in their bid for a medal.

The 14U Girls started their tournament by surprising even themselves against a DDO team that came in expecting a win.  The one-point victory was a nail-biter that had the spectators in the stands in a sweat!  Next up was a superior Saskatchewan team and the rival Mavericks, both losses. After a second loss to the Mavericks to start the playoffs, the girls still had a chance for the Bronze against DDO, who were looking for revenge.  This time, the victory, and the Bronze, went to Montreal.  Despite these losses, the girls played some aggressive and well-positioned defense all weekend.

Both the 14U Boys and 14U Girls have a majority of players new to this level.  This tournament gave both teams the opportunity to see what strengths they have and what they still need to improve.  There was a flame sparked this weekend that can be built into a blaze fueled by focused training, personal growth, and a trust in team.

Go Inferno!
