The eight and nine-year-olds practice twice a week at Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute, Kitchener. Practice includes swimming lessons, treading water, passing the ball, and target practice. “I like being in the water, swimming, throwing, and chasing the ball. I also like playing against other teams,” said Austen, 8.
The newest members of the team had their first taste of the game during scrimmages with the Guelph club in the Fall. Kitchener and Guelph took turns hosting.
The team worked hard and joined the 12Us at Kitchener’s Winter Classic Tournament at the end of November. They played against Hamilton and two Etobicoke teams. “I like how when you work hard at it, it gets easier. It makes it fun to work at,” said Kieran, 8.
“They should be proud of themselves,” said Coach Sarah, who is planning more scrimmages and tournaments in the Winter session. In addition to becoming better swimmers and water polo players, she hopes they have fun.
And they do. Miso and Cameron, both 9, said that what they liked most was seeing their friends. “At practice sometimes we get to jump off the diving board and try to catch a ball in the air!” said Austen. “I like to pretend to be a chicken when we go off the diving board at practice,” said Kieran.
“It’s super fun,” said Nikola, 9. “You have to work really hard but you really achieve stuff. It’s a really fun game to play.” He paused for a moment and then added, “It’s the best!”
