14U Girls - Win Gold at Thompson Cup in Hamilton
After many weeks removed from their last tournament, the 14U Girls took the trip to Hamilton for the Thompson Cup. The 14U Girls were literally 14 girls with the large number of KW players at the pool for the weekend tilt. Every one of these 14 girls contributed to the team’s undefeated surge through the round-robin games against HAWPC, Mavericks, and Shadow.

Our Kraken crew were not kind to the hosts from Hamilton in the first game, quickly scoring goal after goal to cruise to an officially-listed 12-2 victory. The second Saturday game was against the Mavericks in what was a much closer affair ... to start. The Etobicoke team tried their best to keep up with our girls, and they did, for the first three quarters. However, going into the fourth quarter with just a two-point difference between opponents, our Kraken crew opened up with a scoring barrage from which the Mavericks never recovered: 12-5 was the final count. The last team to face before the playoff round was the Scarborough Shadow. In this match-up, KW managed a shut-out victory that went well into the double-digits. As well, the players coming in after the starters put in more than half of KW’s points in this 16-0 win.

This left the 14U Girls undefeated going into the gold-medal game against the Mavericks, and the toughest competition KW faced got tougher in this final game. Any pass our girls made close to the net was doubled by the Mavericks. Our Kraken crew had trouble getting any shots off that threatened the opposing goalie. As the minutes ticked by in this close first half, the Mavericks’ confidence increased. But in the second half, after some adjustments to the game-plan, the girls came out with shots firing from the perimeter to quickly score a few times and to switch the momentum KW’s way for good, ensuring the victory and the gold medal.

With the fourteen 14U girls all getting into the water and playing an important part in the weekend’s success, they showed the other Ontario clubs that the Kraken ready to rise again in the second half of the season. Congratulations to the players, coaches, and families for their efforts at the Thompson Cup.
