Over March break, two of our 16U girls
joined up with girls from Ottawa, Montreal, Winnipeg, Hamilton and
London to compete at the
Alberta Open in Calgary.
The girls arrived Thursday full of excitement and those that arrived early enough went to the pool to cheer on the boys team from Hamilton (which also included one of our own Kraken!).
Our work started on Friday with games against Edmonton Tsunami, Fraser Valley and Calgary Renegades (Black). The girls finished the day with 2 wins (Tsunami & Fraser Valley) and a loss to Calgary Renegades (Black), which placed us 2nd in our pool.
Saturday was a crossover game to ensure the pools were evenly balanced and a semi final. We beat Calgary Renegades (Gold) in the cross over game, which set us up to play Team Saskatchewan in the semi-finals. The girls played strong and had lots of opportunities, but just couldn't sneak many past their goalie! The girls lost the semi final, but that was ok - we got to play Fraser Valley again; this time for bronze.
Sunday the girls left everything in the pool and were rewarded with a bronze medal. Spirits were high following the tournament and since there was time before flights, those with later travel plans took the opportunity to drive out to Banff and see the mountains!
The girls had a great time developing deeper friendships and learning to play together. Thanks to Allyson (Forest City) and Ken (KW Kraken) for kick-starting this idea and making it a reality. And special thanks to coaches Rachelle (Titans), Julia (Titans) and Ken (Kraken), and fellow chaperone Jason (Titans) for a wonderful experience.
