14U Girls Win Gold at Provincials
Submitted By Mark Gibson on Fri 04 19, 19
Let’s begin where the tournament ended ... with our KW Kraken Girls celebrating their 14UG Ontario Water Polo Provincial Championship!

In a dominant Gold Medal Game played at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre in Scarborough on April 14, 2019, our girls defeated the Mavericks from Etobicoke to take first place in the tournament and the province. Many individual highlights punctuated the girls’ remarkable teamplay as passes, communication, and defensive help allowed the players to score, save, steal, and even block shots! And it was appropriate that, at the 14UG Provincial Championships, played on the 14th day of the month, our Kraken Girls posted a score of 14 in a game they won, 14-1.

The cheers and applause rained down from the gallery onto the deck as the Kraken players who were able to attend the weekend event received their medals. The OWP President revealed the added pride he felt in our Kraken Girls’ victory because he was a former member of our KW Water Polo Club. And he shared the joy he felt giving his friend, Coach Glen, the Gold Medal.

The injured and ill members of the team were missed in the pool, but they were not forgotten by their teammates. And their presence at the games they were able to come to and be a part of was greatly appreciated by all.

So how did the girls get to this Gold Medal Game? With much of the same play that won them their final match.

Every individual team member made a move, swam hard for the ball, swam harder to get back on defense, won a battle for the ball, passed to the open player, saved a shot, or scored a goal to contribute to the weekend. The coaches had the girls ready and motivated to do what was required of them to make an impact in the pool for the benefit of the team.

519 Sports Online was there to capture the highlights of the final game.

The weekend started with an 18-3 victory over the tournament host team, Scarborough Shadow. The score was 17-4 against HAWPC in the next game. On Saturday, the one game played was against Capital Wave, who lost to us by 16-2. And Sunday morning, against the team they would beat again in the Gold Medal Game, our Kraken Girls defeated the Mavericks, 16-7.

The success of our girls in an undefeated weekend qualifies the team for the 14UG Eastern National Championship tournament. There are still improvements to make and preparations to put in place ahead of this next event. With each player doing the best she can in practice, she will be ready to do her best in the games.

And with each player at her best, the team will be at its best.

Good luck to the KW Kraken Girls and their coaches as they get ready for Eastern Nationals! And congratulations to them on their 14UG Provincial Championship!
