HSB and HSG at Andrew Watson in Guelph

The Andrew Watson Memorial Tournament kicked off the 2019-2020 OPL season the weekend of Nov 1-3 in Guelph. The KW Kraken was represented by both their 19U Men's and Women's teams at the pool.

The Men's team, short staffed all weekend long due to sudden illnesses battled hard against a huge pool of talented teams, coming within a couple goals in almost every game. Coaches Ryan, Brodie and Patrick were impressed with the healthy players who were still able to suit up and their ability to focus on each competitor despite many obstacles throughout the weekend. Well done Kraken Men!! Keep working hard!

The Women's team had a smaller pool of teams as opponents but it still faced an uphill battle this weekend. They were able to best all three combatants during the round robin to go undefeated. The Kraken Women defeated the SouthWest 2 squad in the semi-finals setting the table for the Gold Medal Game versus...who else, but the Mavericks. Right off the hop, the Mavericks jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead in the first quarter, with the teams alternated goals through the second and third.

The Mavericks maintained a 5-3 lead well into the fourth when the Kraken AWOKE. Three unanswered goals from Sara Alexander, Sarah August, and Trinity Mueller (with 40 seconds left on the clock) allowed KW to take over the game. Then All-Star goaltender Teodora Mikic and her defense imposed their will finishing out the quarter for victory.

As they say...Green and Gold go great together!!

Well done all coaches and players on great efforts throughout the weekend. You did the club proud with your sportsmanship, determination, and grit!
