This weekend KW’s Kraken 13U team competed in their Provincial Championship with 10 other teams at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo. Our Kraken athletes started off the tournament with gusto! Game 1 saw the squad defeating the Scarborough Shadow Tigers 12-6.
Game 2 had the Kraken Krew face off against a very well-oiled machine from the nation's capital. KW came up short in an 18-5 loss vs the Capital Wave A team. Although the game was very tough, the Kraken did not give up regardless of the large goal differential. They battled until the very end to defend the Kraken name.
Game 3 on Saturday had the Kraken square off against another set of tough customers, the Mavericks. This game was highly physical, but KW Kraken put up a big fight and gave the Mavs a run for their money. By the second half, the athletes found their groove and embraced the physicality of it. It was so nice to see teammates supporting teammates, and standing up for each other in the water, and on the bench. When speaking to the media after the game, the coaches were quoted saying "that second half was one of the best halves they have seen their athletes play all season, and if we just counted the score of the second half, it would have been a tie game". However, the Mavericks prevailed with a 13-4 win. Although we're pretty sure the Mavericks realized they were playing with fire when they dared to bring out the Kraken in our athletes during that second half.
Sunday was a new day and brought a new opponent. It was a good way to end the season with an all-around win against Hamilton 12-5. This led to KW solidifying their 7th place finish in the Provincial Championships.
The Kraken coaches are extremely proud of their athletes this season and this weekend. We have seen such great progress made throughout the season in the offence, defence, ball handling, shooting and passing. Every 13U Kraken athlete should come out of this season feeling a great sense of accomplishment.
